Our History

St. Joseph Catholic Church – Zwolle, Louisiana

A Church Before a Town

The story of St. Joseph Catholic Church begins long before the town of Zwolle was formally established. Catholic faith has deep roots in this region, reaching back to the Spanish missionary presence along El Camino Real de los Tejas in the late 1700s. Local tradition speaks of early Catholic worship near the Bayou Scie and Las Cabezas area, where Spanish settlers and Native communities gathered in faith.

By 1881, documented parish records confirm an established Catholic community in the area. St. Joseph was already serving families who had planted both their homes and their faith in Sabine Parish. The Church was not an afterthought of the town — it was one of its foundations.

The Church That Helped Name Zwolle

In 1896, as railroad development expanded into the region, investors from the Kansas City Southern Railway visited the area. Among them was Jan De Goeijen, a native of Zwolle in the Netherlands. According to local history, he was especially struck by St. Joseph’s church building, which stood prominently on a hill overlooking the valley.

When the town was officially named, it was given the name Zwolle, a tribute inspired in part by that visit and the church that stood as a visible sign of faith in the community.

St. Joseph did not grow because of the town. The town grew around St. Joseph.

A Parish Family with Deep Roots

Throughout its history, St. Joseph has served generations of families with rich and diverse cultural heritage. The parish has long been home to Spanish-descended families, Native American communities, and settlers who built their lives in this region.

Sacramental records dating back to the 19th century tell the story of baptisms, marriages, and funerals, milestones that reflect a living, enduring faith passed from one generation to the next.

St. Joseph has walked with its parishioners through times of growth, hardship, celebration, and change, remaining a steady spiritual home for the people of Sabine Parish.

Growing with the Diocese

Over the years, St. Joseph has been served by devoted priests and religious within the diocesan structure of Louisiana. Today, the parish is part of the Diocese of Shreveport, continuing its mission in communion with the wider Church.

Our Mission Continues

More than a century after documented parish life began, St. Joseph Catholic Church remains centered on the Eucharist and faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church. What began as a frontier mission community has grown into a vibrant parish family.

The same faith that sustained the early settlers continues to guide us today — in worship, in service, and in love for one another.
